Making the Most of Beautiful Papers
These gorgeous scrapbook pages were created by guest scrapbooker Sally Ann, using a layout inspired by The Weekly Sketch.
Starting with a sketch is a great to remove the guesswork from designing a page. Rather than wondering where to place your photos or embellishments, you already have a guide that helps everything come together quickly. Every scrapbooker will naturally add their own finishing touches, making each completed page unique.
Let Your Patterned Paper Do the Hard Work
One of the main features of Sally Ann's layout is the stunning floral border paper. Instead of covering it up with large embellishments, she has allowed the flowers to frame her photographs beautifully. This is an excellent reminder that you do not always need to fill every inch of a page with extra decorations. Sometimes a carefully chosen sheet of patterned paper becomes the feature all by itself.
When shopping for papers, keep an eye out for designs with decorative borders, corners or frames. These can instantly draw attention to your photographs while saving you time when putting your pages together. Papers with printed florals, lace effects or leafy patterns often work particularly well for family photographs, garden scenes and special celebrations.
Distressing Your Titles with Scissors
Sally Ann has also added texture to her title by gently roughening the edges of the paper. This is a very easy technique that requires nothing more than a pair of scissors. Carefully run one blade around the edge of your title or paper piece to lift the fibres slightly. The paper begins to soften around the edges, giving it a gently worn appearance.
This simple method creates extra interest without adding thick layers to your page. If your albums are becoming rather full, techniques like this are ideal because they provide texture while allowing your pages to remain relatively flat. You can also try the same technique on photo mats, tags or journalling blocks to tie all the elements of your layout together.
Building Beautiful Flower Embellishments
The flowers on Sally Ann's page are made stamped flower images. Layering different flower styles together gives the page plenty of detail while allowing each bloom to look slightly different from the next.
The stamped flowers have been attached using foam pads, which gently lift them from the page and create extra depth. This small touch makes each flower stand out without overwhelming the layout. Foam pads are an inexpensive addition to any craft collection and can be used behind almost any embellishment to give it a little extra dimension.
Adding Sparkle with Tiny Jewels
The finishing touch comes from the tiny jewel centres placed in each flower. Small gems like these catch the light and add just enough sparkle without taking attention away from the photographs.
If you do not have jewels, there are plenty of alternatives you can use. Small pearls, enamel dots, buttons, tiny punched circles or even drops of glossy accents can all create attractive flower centres. Mixing different finishes across a page can add plenty of interest while using supplies you already own.
Mix Flat and Raised Elements
One of the reasons this layout works so well is that not every embellishment sits at the same height. Some flowers remain flat while others are raised with foam pads. This mixture creates variety without making the page too bulky.
You can use the same approach with butterflies, leaves, sentiments or decorative labels. Raising just a few selected pieces helps guide the eye around the page and gives your layout extra character while still fitting comfortably inside your album protectors.
Stretch Your Supplies Further
This layout is also a great example of getting the most from your craft stash. A single sheet of decorative paper becomes the main feature, while stamped images, die cuts and a handful of jewels complete the design.
You do not need a large collection of products to produce attractive scrapbook pages. Combining a few favourite techniques with papers you love often creates pages that you will enjoy looking back on for years to come.
