Colour Blocking

Using colour blocking techniques can help you organise multiple photos in a clean and elegant layout like this one by guest scrapbooker Ali.

Planning the Layout with a Grid or Blocks

Colour blocking:  is an good way to maintain balance while organising a large number of photos on one page. Ali’s design shows how this technique creates clean lines, allowing the photos to stand out without appearing cluttered.

Symmetry & Balance: The layout uses a grid format to balance photos on both pages. Each photo is framed by solid borders, which brings a sense of balance and consistency.

Colour Choices for Blocked Areas

Soft colours can make a nature themed hobby feel serene, while bright colours add energy to an active sport or party.

Background Paper: Choose patterned or textured paper in colours that align with your photo theme.

Matting the Photos: Each photo is mounted on a dark-coloured background to create contrast and help the images stand out. Darker or complementary shades work well for matting, as they define the edges of your photos, making them pop against the page.

Adding Embellishments and Titles

Embellishments: play a role in making your layout more personalized and interesting, but use embellishments sparingly to avoid overwhelming the photos.

Custom Cut-outs: Incorporate themed shapes to highlight the theme of your layout. For hobbies, you could add icons related to your interest, such as paintbrushes for art; dogs; cats flowers or musical notes.

Journaling and Titles: Leave room for handwritten notes or typed captions that explain the significance of your photos.  Depending on your subject you can make these as long or as short as you wish.  On this layout, Ali has used a brochure from her visit as part of the journalling/title.

Varying Photo Sizes and orientation: Ali’s layout demonstrates the effective use of different sized and orientated photos. This combination of images adds variety to the layout and allows the viewer’s eye to move naturally across the page from left to right.

Keeping It Simple: The Power of Minimalism

Ali’s layout is a great example of how simplicity can be powerful. Despite featuring many photos, the layout remains clean and uncluttered. This is achieved by using minimal embellishments and focusing on the photos themselves. When making a photo-heavy scrapbook page, simplicity is key to keeping the design cohesive and easy to follow.

Limit the Number of Colours: Stick to a limited colour palette to maintain consistency across the spread. Too many colours can make the page feel chaotic and distracting.

Leave White Space: Allow room for your design to breathe by leaving some white space. White space, or areas without photos or embellishments, helps prevent the page from looking too busy and draws attention to the most important parts of your layout.

Creative Use of Journaling Spots

Short and Sweet: Don’t feel you always need to write long paragraphs. A short caption or a couple of sentences, like in Ali’s example, can convey a lot of meaning and help your scrapbook page feel more personal.

Blending with the Theme: Make sure your journaling space aligns with the theme of your layout. For example, if you’re documenting a travel experience, you could use travel-themed paper or stamps around the journaling area. For a nature-themed page, leaf or tree motifs can subtly enhance the journaling box.
