Scrapbooking with Paper and Card Scraps as Embellishments

July 2025 Wk1 Scrapbook Page Layout

Using up scraps of paper and card as embellishments is cost-effective way to complete your layouts. We crafters don’t like waster, but its also a great way to flex your creativity and to experiment.

In the example, you can see how even small leftover triangles of patterned paper have been transformed into coordinating bunting strung across the top corners of the layout.

Here are some more ways you can incorporate paper and card scraps as embellishments:

  • Bunting and Garlands
Cut triangles, circles or flags from small scraps and string them with thread or twine. (save small pieces of ribbon from tags and hangers on new clothes)  Arrange across a corner or curve them, like the bunting in the sample image.
  • Layered Photo Corners
Use leftover strips or small triangles of card to tuck behind photo corners. This helps frame your images, especially effective when using several photos on a single spread.
  • Punched Shapes and Die-Cuts
Use paper punches or your electronic cutting machine to turn scraps into flowers, hearts, stars or other motifs.
  • Handmade Tabs or Flags
Cut small rectangles or banner shapes to make journaling tabs, date labels or accents. Fold one edge under a photo for a clean tucked look.
  • Patchwork Backgrounds
Piece together a background from scraps like a quilt – either in a geometric grid or a looser mosaic style. This works well for layouts with a cosy, domestic theme or when you want to use up coordinated offcuts from a paper pad.
  • Journaling Mats and Strips
Mount handwritten journaling on layered paper strips or stack thin scraps vertically or horizontally to draw attention to your words.
  • Paper Ribbons and Borders
Use long, narrow strips as faux ribbons or borders. You can fringe them, snip the ends into fishtails, or curl them for a dimensional effect.
  • Mini Tags or Labels
Punch holes in small rectangles or shapes to create tags from even the tiniest scraps. These are perfect for dates, names or mini messages.

When using up scraps, don't worry about everything matching perfectly—embrace the layered, collected feel.
