Dec 2025 Wk1 Techniques to Try from a Double Page Travel Layout
Here are five ideas taken from the layout made by Cheryl, each with a explanation of how you can achieve the same effect in your own layouts.
Using Circles
• Cut photos or patterned papers into circles using a circle cutter, die or template.
• Layer the circles so they slightly overlap vertical or horizontal elements to soften strong lines.
• Add faux stitching with a pen around the edges to give the circles a finished look.
• Use circles to highlight part of a photo when the whole image feels too busy.
Stacking Photos for Visual Flow
• Select three landscape photos that relate to each other to create a sequence or story.
• Crop them to the same width so they stack neatly.
• Mount each on a narrow mat to separate them from the background.
• Align the stack beside a strong vertical feature so the photos look structured and intentional.
Adding a Journalling Block that Stands Out
• Choose a contrasting cardstock colour for your journalling area so the writing becomes a feature.
• Draw lines with a fine pen or stencil to keep handwriting neat.
• Position the journalling block on the opposite page to balance photo-heavy areas.
• Match the pen colour to an embellishment or mat to bring harmony to the spread.
Creating a Vertical Title Panel
• Cut a long vertical strip from patterned paper or textured cardstock.
• Layer a narrower strip on top to add dimension before adding your title.
• Place a small banner shape at the top to frame the title and direct the eye.
• Add a small cluster of enamel dots, brads or gems at the bottom to finish the panel.
Blending Patterned Paper with Solid Cardstock
• Choose patterned papers that echo the colours or textures in your photos.
• Use small pieces of patterned paper behind circles or panels rather than large background sheets to avoid overpowering the photos.
• Ink the edges of patterned paper pieces to give definition and prevent them blending into similar colours.
• Combine patterned paper with strong solid cardstocks to maintain balance and structure.
