Matting Photos to Give Cohesion to a Layout

June 2025 Wk3 Scrapbook Page Layout

Matting photos is a simple technique in scrapbooking that can bring unity to a layout with multiple images.

By giving each photo a consistent border, you help the viewer see the images as a set, rather than a scattered group.

This works particularly well when documenting a trip or a day out, as seen in the feature layout.  In this double-page spread, the photos are all matted with a soft yellow-green cardstock, providing a subtle but noticeable frame that ties the pictures together.

Even though the images vary in lighting and setting—ranging from woodland paths to viaduct views—the matching mats give them a cohesive look that grounds the layout. The matting also helps the photos stand out from the background papers, particularly important if you use printed paper as the background.

Variations on the Matting Theme

  • Double Matting: Add a second layer of matting in a contrasting colour to increase depth. For example, use a dark outer mat and a light inner one for a framed effect.
  • Ink the Edges: Lightly inking the edges of your matting with distress ink or stamping ink can add definition and make the photos pop even more.
  • Patterned Paper Mats: Instead of plain cardstock, try matting with patterned paper that ties into the theme—maps for a travel layout, floral prints for garden photos, etc.
  • Mixing Mat Sizes: Varying the width of the mat around different photos can draw attention to a focal image. For example, you might use a wider mat for the central photo in a layout.
  • Add Texture: Use textured cardstock or even fabric swatches for a tactile matting effect. This works particularly well on heritage or nature-themed pages.
  • Coordinate with Embellishments: In the example layout, the matting colour echoes the green die-cut border and journalling tag thread, reinforcing the visual theme.
