Streamline your titling

Titles help to tell the story at a glance and provide context for your photos. One way to streamline your page design is to add titles directly to your digital photos before printing them. This not only saves space on the layout itself but also integrates the words seamlessly with the image.

Using Software to Add Titles

• Photo Editing Software
  Programmes such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo or Corel PaintShop Pro allow you to insert text directly on to your digital images. You can choose fonts, colours, text effects and alignment, then position your title anywhere on the picture. This option offers the greatest flexibility for styling and layering.
• Free Online Tools
  Websites like Canva provides a (free) way to add text to photos. It has an easy drag-and-drop interface where you can overlay your title, try different typefaces and apply effects such as shadowing or transparency.
• Mobile Apps
  If you prefer editing on your phone or tablet, Canva is available free as an app, or take a look at Project life. They allow you to add lettering directly to your photos without needing a PC. These are ideal if you want to add titles while travelling or working on the go.

Alternative Ideas for Adding Titles Directly on to Photos

• Web-Based Photo Printing Companies
  Services such as Photobox, Snapfish and BonusPrint include simple editing options when you upload your photos for printing. These tools let you add text, captions or titles before finalising your order.
• Photo Kiosks at Printing Shops
  Many supermarket and chemist photo-printing machines have built-in editing features. Before you confirm your order, you can usually add basic text in different fonts and colours. This is a quick, accessible solution if you don’t want to use specialist software.
• Stickers or Rub-ons Over the Photo
  Titles can also be applied directly to the photo once it’s printed. Alphabet stickers, die cut-outs (from machines such as Big Shot, Cricut or ScanNCut); or rub-on transfers can adhere neatly to the glossy or matte surface. Choosing a contrasting colour will make sure your title stands out against the background of the photo.  (Editor – I wouldn’t do this on one of a kind or vintage photos as its irreversible – make a copy first)
• Printable Transparent Overlays
  Another option is to print your photo without text but use a word processor or graphics programme to create the title on a sheet of printable transparency film. You then lay the film directly over the photo in your scrapbook. This gives the impression of text printed on the photo, while keeping the original image untouched.
