Using Symmetry on a layout

Whether it’s through matching photo placement, repeated elements, or mirrored embellishments, symmetrical layouts can make your pages look polished and thoughtfully composed.

The example attached has examples of symmetry although you might not immediately identify them!  What can you see?

Here are some ideas to use symmetry in your scrapbook layouts:

• Mirror Image Pages
  Use a double page spread where the left and right sides mirror each other in layout and design. This works beautifully when you have a series of photos from the same event, as seen in the attached layout. The balance of the left page's trio of angled photos and the single, central photo on the right creates a unified, pleasing structure.
• Central Focal Point with Matching Sides
  Place a main element such as a photo or title in the centre of your page and create symmetrical embellishment clusters or journalling blocks on either side. This creates a strong focal point while keeping the design even and neat.
• Symmetrical Title and Embellishments
  Use symmetry in the smaller details by placing the title centrally and echoing embellishments like flowers, tags, or stamps on both sides. In the example, the floral decorations on the bottom left are balanced by a vertical line of flower embellishments on the right, maintaining visual equilibrium.
• Repeating Shapes or Patterns
  Choose a shape—like circles, hearts, or stars—and use them in a mirrored fashion across the page. For example, if you place three stars on the left edge, mirror them on the right for balance.
• Split Colour Blocking
  Divide your layout into two equal halves using colour or patterned paper, and mirror the style or layout of photos and journalling in each half. This can be a striking and cohesive way to frame your content.
• Symmetrical Journalling Boxes
  Place journalling spots in the same position on both pages of a spread, or use one journalling block centred between two pages to unify the layout and draw the eye across the spread.
• Corner-to-Corner Balance
  Try placing embellishments diagonally opposite one another—for example, a floral cluster in the bottom left and a decorative panel or motif in the top right. The attached layout features this style, with flowers on the lower left and a “happiness is like a butterfly” corner detail on the upper right, drawing the eye across the spread and maintaining symmetry through contrast.

Symmetrical layouts like the one in the attached example are especially effective for storytelling, as they naturally lead the viewer’s eye from one page to the other, reinforcing the connection between the photos and moments shared.
