Seven steps to get your printed photos organised

Do you find yourself overwhelmed by the amount and variety of photos you have scattered around the house?  Or perhaps you’ve inherited a photo collection or become the go-to family photo archivist?

By following a few basic steps you can get on top of getting organised in a very quick and stress free way, and save yourself lots of time when you start to make your scrapbook albums.

1. Gather all your photos in one place.

This may take you an hour, an afternoon or a few weeks, depending on how many you have and where they are!  A storage box kept in the living room or on the dining table will remind you to keep going with the project

 2. Optional extra

Ask family for photos of occasions and gatherings to include in your collection

3. Sort

Sort them out into Categories. Sort photos chronologically if your goal is to complete scrapbooks by date or event.

Or if you want to track a specific event, person, or topic, by themes (like holidays or birthdays). Get as specific as you want—it’s your system.

4. Sift

Edit as you sort.  Chuck out (or give away) duplicates and get rid of those blurred photos.  (unless its one of a kind)

5. Label

Lable as you sort.  If you can, jot down names places and dates on the back of the photos with a soft pencil (never use biro!!)  Ask family or friends to help with names/dates

6. Store

Store prints in a photo storage box. Get yourself a box to store your photos in short term.  This isn’t meant to be for permanent storage so a shoe box or similar will do.

7. Digital?

What about digital?  You still need a storage system.  Start now by ensuring you save them all to the same place on your computer, and make a backup too!!  More about this soon……
