7 photo organising dilemmas and how to solve them

1.  I don’t know where to start

  • Start with making a plan on how to get organised.
  • Where can you gather all your photos together?
  • Where are they all – make a list of places to check
  • How do you want to organise them, by date, family, place?

2. I’m overwhelmed with the quantity of photos I have

  • Break the time spent down into small chunks, you don’t have to get everything done immediately
  • Allocate an area where you can store photos as you find them
  • Schedule a time slot each week to work on organising
  • Ask family members to help you

3. My photos stir emotions and memories and it stops me progressing with organising

  • Allow yourself time to enjoy the good memories, and grieve over the not so good.
  • Photos are very evocative, but don’t let that distract you too much, try concentrate on the job in hand.
  • Ask a good friend to help, they will be able to assist without the emotional attachment

4. I don’t know the people in the photos

  • It’s an opportunity to connect with your family and friends and ask them about the images!
  • Contact cousins etc, you have the same grandparents so they may know faces you don’t recognise.

5. I don’t have enough time to do this

  • Plan to do a little bit for organising each week.
  • Set up a permanent organising corner somewhere so you can work on your organising without having to pack up each time.
  • Ask family and friends to help.

 6. Our family photos are scattered everywhere

  • Start gathering photos as you find them
  • Have a central point to gather them all together.
  • Try to organise as you go, so there’s no massive sorting job at the end
  • Ask family if they have photos they would like to contribute, they will be interested to hear about your project.

7. I don't know how to organise them

  • Think about organising by subject, family or chronologically
  • If you’re not sure, go with date order.
  • If you’re scrapbooking, think about how your albums will be organised

Organisation will save you time in the long run... spend time now to save time later when you are making your albums
