Notes from a Craft Studio — get to know me

What would you change about what you do?

Can you invent me a machine that does all the mundane stuff please?  Like houseword and cleaning.... plus accounts, labelling products and repacking bulk purchases into smaller packs, and uploading photos to my website? Other than that, I’m pretty happy with my life and business.  My residential weekends bring me incredible joy and satisfaction, and I love how they’ve evolved to embrace many crafts now. The residentials started off as purely scrapbooking weekends, to encourage people to re-live and write their memories; and make keepsake albums for their families.  I continue to love that I can inspire people to get...

What has helped your business the most?

My friends tell me I’m annoyingly positive at times, but I think you have to be when you run a business, so I’d say its that, plus a willingness to learn and always trying new ideas. I always try to plan ahead, and I make loads of lists (Google Keep is my friend, its free, look it up…) and I use a technique called ‘Time Blocking’ to be productive.  Its not always easy working for yourself, there’s no big boss cracking the whip…  But the bottom line is, if you don’t do what needs doing, you don’t have a business,...

That’s a question with many answers!   I love that I inspire people to make things….  Just a little spark to start them off, an idea or a picture, or a new product and I can see their eyes light up! Another aspect is the social side of the residential events and workshops I run.  Many friendships have been forged and cemented via my craft weekends… I think that creativity brings people together who would never normally meet….  Craft gives people a reason to chat, It crosses the spectrum of lives, ages and interests and allows those that might be lonely...

....are you creating memory albums with amnesia?

Posted by Linda Gransby on

My inherited family album sits in pride of place in my bookshelf... i love it... A weighty tome, with gold edged pages, thick card inserts and beautiful watercolour decorated frames around each photo. Photos of stiff victorian men, and women in amazing dresses and headgear look out at me from the pages. Getting your photo taken back in the day was not a 5 minute task.... it was an occaision......It involved making time on your precious day off, putting on your Sunday best clothes and taking a trip to a photographers studio... probably by train or charabang to the nearest...
